Assignment #2
Some author's seem to put figurative language in their books as a standard to let the readers get in the position of the character in the story.McCarthy's depressing post-apocalyptic tale "The Road" describes a journey in which "the man's demise helps to illuminate the meaning of surviving through the many aspects life put them through."The Road," is an image of the terrifying journeys the man and the son live through. As stated by the author, "The boy so frail and thin through his coat, shivering like a dog."(Cormac pg.67)This descriptive quote shows how they are really suffering to live through this journey and have nothing. While on their journey the "man" is in bad condition, "he waited the beach slumped and coughing."(Cormac McCarthy pg.249) His body language shows how depressing he felt, and he was probably getting sick.Towards the end of the story the father tries to save himself but by the condition he's in, it's nothing he could do."His leg was bleeding badly. He could feel his trousers sticking to the skin."(Cormac pg.264) As he's trying to survive his condition becomes cruel. This story has made us see the world as we are in their position. The way the boy was left without the man show's the bond they had with each other and whether it was real or not.
